Definition Dark-grey, partly black, calcareous, laminated claystone. Its thickness generally does not exceed a couple of metres.
Upper Boundary The Plenus Marl Member is distinguished from the overlying Ommelanden Formation by its high clay content which causes a distinct kick on the gamma-ray, acoustic and resistivity logs.
Lower Boundary The Plenus Marl Member is distinguished from the underlying Texel Marlstone Member by its high clay content which causes a distinct kick on the gamma-ray, acoustic and resistivity logs.
Distribution This member is very widely distributed over the North Sea area (Deegan and Scull (1977) ; Crittenden et al (1991) ). It is missing, however, in parts of the southern North Sea area and locally in the central and southern Dutch onshore area.
Age Probably latest Cenomanian Jarvis et al (1988) . A number of authors assigned this unit to the earliest Turonian (e.g. Jefferies (1963) ; Lieberkind et al (1982) ; Crittenden et al (1991) ).
Depositional Setting Its limited thickness and wide distribution, combined with mineralogical and palaeontological features, have led to the idea that this bed represents an 'oceanic anoxic event', a world-wide sea-level highstand, coupled with a rise of the oxygen-minimum zone (Schlanger et al (1987) ).
