Lithological description

Medium to very coarse sand and coarse gravel, with cobbles, boulders and blocks. Local loam or clay, especially at the top, coarse sand lenses.

Depositional setting

Fluvial (western Meuse).

Definition of lower boundary

Sharp contact with various Neogene, Paleogene, Cretaceous and Paleozoic units. Locally incised into Rothem or St. Pietersberg Members (Beegden Formation) or into Rhine sand and gravel (Sterksel Formation).

Definition of upper boundary

Locally exposed at the surface. Commonly, sharp contact with periglacial aeolian and local river loam and sand (Boxtel Formation). Locally incised by Oost-Maarland or Gronsfeld Members (Beegden Formation).

Thickness indication
Up to about 15 m.
Geographical distribution
Southeasternmost part of the Netherlands, along the Meuse river.

North Sea: not present; UK: not present; GER: ?; BEL: Lanklaar Formation (Eisden Member; Gullentops et al. 2001).
