Shell banks (crags) composed in part of fossil dog whelks, tower snails, basket clams and scallops (cf. Spaink 1975).

Depositional setting

Beach (ridge) and nearshore (storm ridge; Hodgson 1989).

Definition of lower boundary

Sharp contact with shallow-marine sand and clay (Oosterhout Formation, undifferentiated).

Definition of upper boundary

Sharp contact with shallow-marine sand and clay (Oosterhout Formation, undifferentiated).

Thickness indication
Up to about 50 m. Shell layers up to about 10 m.

Southwestern Netherlands.

North Sea: not distinguished; UK: Corraline Crag and Red Crag Formations (Mathers & Zalasiewicz 1988; Gibbard et al. 1998); GER: not present; BEL: Antwerp Crag.
