Lithological description
Sequence of variegated conglomerates, sandstones and claystones at the base of the Weiteveen Formation. Conglomerates are highly polymict, and contain rounded claystone, marl, sandstone, and quartz pebbles. Limonite, coal and plant remains are common. Upwards, change into variegated, slightly dolomitic or anhydritic mudstones.
Depositional setting
Flood-plain to fluvial-plain setting with intermittent lacustrine conditions.
Definition of lower boundary
Unconformably overlies the Altena Group or older sediments.
Definition of upper boundary
Placed at the base of the first distinct anhydrite or limestone bed, which coincides with the upward disappearance of variegated colours, typical for this member.

Origin of name
Named after the village of Weiteveen, municipality of Schoonebeek, in the southeastern part of the province of Drente.
