Woudenberg Formation

Formal (Weerts et al. 2003).
Lithological description

Brown to black peat, firm, amorphous, clayey, non-calcareous. Gyttja, firm, usually amorphous.

Depositional setting

Nutrient-poor (moss peat) to nutrient-rich (reed, sedge and woody peat) marsh and swamp.

Definition of lower boundary

Gradual transition into tidal clay (Eem Formation) or into humic periglacial sand (Boxtel Formation). Sharp contact with glaciofluvial sand and gravel (Drente Formation, Schaarsbergen Member).

Definition of upper boundary

Sharp contact with periglacial sand (Boxtel Formation) or, erosively, with fluvial gravelly sand (Kreftenheye Formation).
