New seabed-sediment map: more insight into the seabed of the Dutch North Sea

The composition of the upper half meter of the seabed, including the proportions of mud, sand and gravel, has been mapped more accurately than ever with the updated seabed sediment map of the Dutch North Sea. The map describes the North Sea seabed in grid cells of 100 by 100 meters. Using a random forest algorithm, the sediment composition for each grid cell has been predicted based on seabed samples and bathymetry.

What is new?

  • A new map layer has been added: the mud-percentage map. This map layer provides more detailed insight into variations in mud content than the existing Folk classifications, making subtle spatial differences more visible. This offers additional detail for applications where sediment composition is important, such as analyses in the shallow North Sea domain.
  • The integration of new data makes it possible to fully map the Dutch coastline.
  • Updated bathymetry data from EMODnet have been applied.
