Status
Formal (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1994).
Lithological description
Sequence of sandstones, siltstones and claystones. Composed of basal, fine-grained, light-coloured sandstone, grading laterally and vertically into red to green clay-siltstones in the basin or fine-grained, cemented sandstones in the basin fringe.
Depositional setting
Fluvial, lacustine.
Definition of lower boundary
Base of the massive basal sandstone, which forms a subtle unconformity.
Definition of upper boundary
Base of the Detfurth Formation or, on the swells, at the base of the Solling Formation of the Upper Germanic Trias Group. The upper boundary may be difficult to identify in cases where the uppermost sandy part of the Volpriehausen is directly overlain by either the Detfurth or the Solling formations.
Thickness indication
Up to 200 m in the lows and controlled to a great extent by intra-Triassic erosion. It reaches 100 m in the Ems Low and 150 m in the Roer Valley Graben. In well K15-FB-108 a section of 411 m is found.

Origin of name
New formation name, derived from the German stratigraphic nomenclature.
Previous name(s)
Comprises the Volpriehausen Sandstone and Clay-Siltstone members, and their basin-fringe equivalents, which were formerly assigned to the now abandoned Middle Bunter Formation of NAM and RGD (1980).
