Lithological description
Carbonate - anhydrite - salt - anhydrite sequence. In the basin-margin setting the formation comprises claystones and sandstones.
Depositional setting
Marine.
Definition of lower boundary
Located at the top of the uppermost anhydrite of the Z1 Upper Anhydrite Member respectively. At the fringe of the basin, its lower boundary has been placed at the base of the Red-brown Salt Clay Member.
Definition of upper boundary
Below the Grey Salt Clay Member of the Z3 (Leine) Formation, and may be formed by the top of the Z2 Basal Anhydrite Member, the Z2 Salt Member, the Z2 Roof Anhydrite Member or one of the clastic Z2 fringe members.
Thickness indication
Up to 2785 m in K10-14.

Derived from the German stratigraphic nomenclature, where it is applied to the second evaporite cycle (Richter-Bernburg 1955).
