Group of mainly light-grey, brown and black carbonates. Variable number of claystones can be intercalated. In places bedded cherts occur.

Underlain by clastic sediments of the Banjaard group.
Definition of upper boundary
Overlain by claystones of the Limburg Group.

Origin of name
Name derived from the British stratigraphic nomenclature where it is used for the massive Lower Carboniferous carbonate deposits of northwestern Europe.
