NUNIHO
Status
Formal (Doppert et al. 1975). Amended (Weerts & Busschers 2003).
Lithological description

Brown to black reed, sedge, woody and moss peat, fibric to amorphous, in situ and detrital. Subordinate yellow to greenish brown gyttja.

Depositional setting

Eutrophic to mesotrophic (reed, sedge and woody peat) and locally eutrophic (moss peat) coastal marsh and swamp, lacustrine (gyttja).

Definition of lower boundary

Commonly, sharp contact with tidal sand and clay (Wormer (lowest Hollandveen) and Walcheren (other peat layers) Members, Naaldwijk Formation). Gradual transition into humic fluvial clay (Echteld Formation). Locally, directly on top of Pleistocene sand.

Definition of upper boundary

Commonly exposed at the surface. Elsewhere, sharp contact with tidal sand and clay (Walcheren Member, Naaldwijk Formation) or gradual transition into humic fluvial clay (Echteld Formation).

Thickness indication
Up to about 6 m (Bosch & Kok 1994; Bos 2010).
Geographical distribution
Coastal and river plains in the western and northern Netherlands. Intercalated with tidal clastics (Naaldwijk Formation) or on top of or below base of fluvial (Echteld Formation) clastics.
Regional correlation
North Sea: not distinguished; UK: British Coastal Deposits Group (Breydon Formation) (McMillan et al. 2011); GER: part of Holozäne Nordsee Formation (Brand et al. 1965; Barckhausen et al. 1977), Torfkomplex (Preuss 1979); BEL: Pervijze Bed (Gullentops et al. 2001).
Age
late Northgrippian (Subboreal) - middle Meghalayan (early Subatlantic) (Zagwijn 1986; De Mulder & Bosch 1982; Westerhoff et al. 1987; Vos et al 2011).
Holostratotype
Depth (thickness) AH:
0 - 5.3 m (5.3 m) below surface level
Comments:
Intercalated peat layers are part of the Nieuwkoop Formation or the Echteld Formation.
Origin of name
Introduced by Polak (1929) to mark the thick peat layer in the provinces North Holland, South Holland and Utrecht.
Previous name(s)
Wold Formation (Roeleveld 1974), Broek Formation (Berendsen 1982, 1984).
