Wintelre Member

Code
NMVEWI
Status
Formal (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1997). Amended, name change (2018).
Lithological description

Grey to greenish grey clays, locally with brownish colours. Becomes more silty and sandy towards the top. Most typically developed in the Roer Valley Graben. On the Peel and Venlo Blocks it is only a thin clay layer between the Voort and Someren members.

Depositional setting

Inner-neritic marine environment. Intervals with high abundance of agglutinated species may have been deposited in deeper water.

Definition of lower boundary

Conformably or mildly unconformably overlies the Voort Member in its southern area of distribution. Where the Voort Member is absent, the Wintelre Member can be distinguished from the underlying Boom Member by the higher silt content in the upper part of latter, expressed on the gamma-ray log by a lower reading. Furthermore, the Boom Member shows a typical brownish colour, whereas the Wintelre Member exhibits greenish-grey aspects.

Definition of upper boundary

Overlain conformably by the Someren Member in the Roer Valley Graben and on the Peel and the Venlo Blocks. Elsewhere it is unconformably overlain by the Breda Formation.

Thickness indication
Up to ~140 m.
Geographical distribution
Regional correlation
UK: Lark Formation; GER: -; BEL: Veldhoven Member of the Voort Formation Marechal & Laga (1988).
Age
Lower part: late Oligocene (Chattian). In the additional reference well Broekhuizenvorst the age is early Miocene (late Acquitanian - early Burdigalian).

935 - 1047 m (112 m)
Parastratotype
Depth (thickness) AH:
619 - 715 m (96 m)
Hypostratotype
Depth (thickness) AH:
952 - 1088 m (136 m)

244 - 246 m (2 m)
Origin of name
Named after the village of Wintelre.
Previous name(s)
Veldhoven Clay Member (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1997). The name was changed because Veldhoven was already in use as formation name. Furthermore, the aim is to avoid lithology in lithostratigraphic names (e.g. 'clay').
