Definition A bluish grey, limestone-rich claystone interval which is characterised by the dominant occurrence of serpulid fragments. The frequently intercalated microcoquina beds and laminae contain abundant pelecypod and ostracod remains. Anhydritic beds and nodules are abundant.
Upper Boundary Its upper boundary with the Coevorden Claystone Formation is marked by a characteristic wire-line log marker, corresponding to a conspicuous claystone break in a clayey-marly interval with limestones.
Lower Boundary It usually conformably overlies the Upper Marl Member, but locally unconformably overlies the Altena Group or older sediments.
Distribution Dutch part of the Lower Saxony Basin, which reaches the easternmost parts of the Dutch provinces of Groningen, Drente and Overijssel.
Age Late Portlandian - earliest Ryazanian(?) (t Hart (1969) ; Kemper (1973) Kemper (1973) ) The base of the Cretaceous (Ryazanian) is currently placed near the top of the Serpulite Member (Kemper (1973) Kemper (1973) ; Allen, P. and Wimbledon, W.A (1991) : at the base of the Upper Serpulite in Germany, which is absent in the Netherlands). The end of the Portlandian is characterised by a sharp decrease in Classopollis (Burger (1966) , Herngreen et al (1980) ). The member is placed in zone Upper Malm 6 or F of the regional ostracod zonation (Wolburg (1949) ; Sung (1955) ; t Hart (1969) . Ostracods occurring frequently in this member are: Cypridea dunkeri carinata, C. posticalis, C. binodosa and C. fasciculata.
Depositional Setting Lacustrine basin-margin to marginal-marine sub-basin (lagoonal) setting. The dominance of carbonates points to a low input of clastic material.
Sequence Stratigraphy The member mainly represents the Highstand systems tract of sequences LZA 1.4 and 1.5a, as can be seen from the generally funnel-shaped log patterns.
