Formal (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1993). The SK-Group, SG-Group and SL-Group can be taken together as Upper Jurassic Supergroup (code S).
Lithological description

Grey and variegated claystones, coaly to clayey sandstones, rare coal seams, and locally calcareous intercalations.

Depositional setting

Paralic to continental environment, but some restricted-marine (lagoonal) intercalations occur, especially around the boundaries with adjoining marine units.

Definition of lower boundary

In the major part of the Jurassic basins it unconformably overlies the Altena Group. On elevated blocks, and outside these basins, the group may rest on deposits of Triassic or Permian age.

Definition of upper boundary

More or less conformably overlain by the Scruff Group in the southern Dutch Central Graben and Terschelling Basin. Elsewhere the Rijnland Group conformably, or locally unconformably covers this group, except in strongly inverted areas, where the Chalk Group or Lower North Sea Group unconformably rests on this group.

Origin of name
Named after the polder authority of Schieland, in the heart of the province of Zuid Holland, between the cities of Gouda and Delft.
