Carboniferous Limestone Group CL

Premise Unit, defined by Van Adrichem Boogaert and Kouwe (1994).
Derivatio nominis Name derived from the British stratigraphic nomenclature where it is used for the massive Lower Carboniferous carbonate deposits of northwestern Europe.

Definition A group of mainly light-grey, brown and black carbonates. A variable number of claystones can be intercalated. In places bedded cherts occur. The thickness of the group varies greatly.
Upper Boundary The group is overlain by claystones of the Limburg Group.
Lower Boundary The group is underlain by clastic sediments of the Banjaard group
Distribution The group is poorly known within the Netherlands. The ocurrence in the south, along the northern flank of the London-Brabant Massif is documented best. However, the group is expected to occur in parts of the central and eastern Netherlands as well. Towards the north and east the carbonates of the group probably interfingers with clastic basin deposits, depending on the palaeogeographic position of the particular area. The northern development and the transition to the Farne Group are completely unknown.
Age The age of the group is Dinantian (Tournaisian and Visean).
Depositional Setting The group is a marine deposit formed on a carbonate platform and its basinward slope.
Subdivision Only one formation has been recognised in the Netherlands. Once more data become available on the basinal development of the Dinantian, as in NW Germany in the borehole Münsterland 1 (Richwien (1963) ), the need may arise to define more formations within the Carboniferous Limestone Group.
