Formal (Jeffery et al. 1991). Seismostratigraphically defined.
Lithological description
Grey, slightly silty, fine to moderately coarse-grained sand and silty clay with wood remains.
On seismic profiles the unit is recognizable by its amorphous nature; slightly inclined reflections, dipping northwest may be visible. The top is characterized by a strong, irregular reflection.
Depositional setting
Deltaic (prodelta, delta front), open marine.
Definition of lower boundary
Unconformable contact with mostly similar deltaic sand and clay (Aurora Formation).
Definition of upper boundary
Unconformable contact with paler and mostly deltaic sand and clay (Yarmouth Roads Formation).
Lateral boundaries
Lateral transition to the base of the Yarmouth Roads Formation.
Thickness indication
Up to approximately 25 m, thinning eastward.
Geographical distribution
Present in the far north of the Dutch continental shelf.
Regional correlation
Netherlands (onshore): time equivalent of the Appelscha Formation; UK: Aberdeen Ground Formation (Jeffery et al. 1991), How Hill Member of the Wroxham Formation (Rose et al. 2001); GER: not distinguished; BEL: absent.
Age
Early to Middle Pleistocene (Bavelian to early Cromerian).

Origin of name
Named after a Dutch naval ship that participated in the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1781.
