Free data
There are several kinds of data to which any requesting party can gain immediate access. These are determined in the context of the DINOShop.

  1. Metadata
Data about data, such as summaries, tables, catalogues, etc. The level of detail determines the degree to which these data is immediately and openly accessible .
  2. Demodata
These are intended to give the requesting party an idea of what the data consist of; this can vary according to the application / type of data.
  3. Maps
These are maps (3D models) of the Dutch soil/subsurface and the natural resources found there, up to a scale of 1:100,000, in a standard atlas layout.

Conditions applicable to all users [back to top]
All users of data must agree to the 'TNO terms and conditions for the provision and use of geoscientific data and information'. These conditions can be requested from TNO-NITG and can also be found on the Institute's website. This statement of consent has been integrated into the application procedure for using the DINO system.

University researchers and students [back to top]
Students and people conducting fundamental geoscientific research must submit the results (reports) of the research for which they used the DINO data to TNO-NITG. If they require limited assistance from TNO employees to carry out the research or study, they must submit a written request; in the case of students, it must be accompanied by a request from the professor/instructor. There may be restrictions regarding the times during which these parties can log in.

Commercial users [back to top]
Occasional commercial customers must pay in advance. This can be done through a credit card organisation (e.g., Bibit). The occasional user can either choose to pay an inexpensive, one-time entry fee or take out a temporary subscription (for one workweek), which includes a certain amount of help desk functions.
Frequent users can take out a subscription including help desk support and other functions (described below). There are two subscriptions available, standard or plus, depending on the capacity load that the requesting parties place on the DINO system.

Arrangements made with suppliers of data [back to top]
In certain situations, arrangements can be made with customers who are also major suppliers of information. The costs for these arrangements are considered costs for collecting data. The arrangements concern the 'domain' in which the supply of data takes place and are established by the management at the Institute level.

Confidential data [back to top]
Theoretically, DINO includes only data classified as non-confidential. However, some data have been classified by their supplier as confidential, either by virtue of legislation (the Mining Act) or due to special interests, which are usually temporary in nature. In the exceptional case that such data have indeed been included in DINO, only their supplier can lift the embargo limiting their access. Whether the data can then be disseminated through the DINOShop depends on the terms under which the exemption was granted, given that it is not yet possible to safeguard the confidentiality of data provided over the Internet. The requesting party will be charged for the costs associated with having TNO employees mediate in getting the embargo lifted.
