Once an exploration borehole has been made suitable for the production or storage of minerals, it is called a production well or storage well, or referred to simply as a well. A well might comprise a single borehole, but it can also comprise a system of boreholes. The latter is the case when a well branches out underground because secondary boreholes, the so-called sidetracks, have been drilled out from the main borehole. An exploration borehole can be made suitable for multiple use. As an example, two or more production units, tubing strings, may be hanged in the borehole. Each tubing string is a separate well, which implies that wells may have the same surface location.

Wells in DINOShop have a code. The well code is the borehole code used by TNO-NITG. When more than one well is realised in a borehole, a suffix letter is added to the borehole code.
