Sediment Classification NEN5104
In 1989 the Netherlands Standardisation Institute (NNI) published a sediment classification standard NEN5104 ("e;NEN5104 Classificatie van onverharde grondmonsters"e;). This document defines the nomenclature of the lithological description of drilling samples for all unconsolidated deposits. The starting point for the classification is the division of a sample into fractions, one comprising organic matter and four others based on particle size.

Particle size

Name of the fraction
< 2 µm
>= 2 µm
>= 63 µm
>= 2 mm
>= 63 mm
>= 200 mm
>= 630 mm

- < 63 µm
- < 2000 µm
- < 63 mm
- < 200 mm
- < 630 mm

lutum
silt
sand
gravel (incl. shells)
cobble
boulders
blocks

The weight percentages of the fractions in a sample are plotted in a series of three triangular graphs. According to NEN5104 fivelithologies exist: gravel, peat, sand, clay and loam. A further subdivision is done on basis of admixtures.

More information about this classification system can be found at: www.nen.nl/normshop; however, you must have a NEN subscription to download the standards.
