The knowledge that we have acquired over the last hundred years about our soil, rocks and sediments comes from drilling samples obtained through borehole drilling. We possess a relatively large quantity ofsediments and rock, even from great depths. The fact that our subsurface is not very hard means that we can drill to great depths with relatively light drilling equipment.

There are two ways to drill: with muscle power or with a machine. With the manual method, we can drill down four to twelve metres, depending on the soil composition. Several manual borings can be made in a single day to ascertain the position of layers present in the subsurface. Mechanical borings can reach down hundreds of metres and their execution can take days. At finishing the hole, pipes (piezometers) can be put in place to monitor groundwater levels. Exploration for oil and gas occurs with even heavier drilling gear, which has special provisions to prevent oil and gas from rising to the surface during the drilling process.

For the moment, DINOShop provides access to borings that primarily cover the shallow subsurface, mostly taken as the strata up to a few hundred metres deep.

The Netherlands Standardisation Institute (NNI) has issued a national standard to ensure that the composition of the loose (unconsolidated) deposits is described in an unambiguous manner: NEN5104 Sediment Classification. This standardisation greatly improves the efficiency for comparing geological data. Therefore TNO-NITG uses this standard as the basis for its descriptions of drilling samples according to the Standard Description method for Boreholes [SBB]. The oldest boring in DINO Borings dates from 1834 and new borehole descriptions are added every day. All borings in the database of the Dutch subsurface have been labelled with a quality code.
